Make the Slice a Thing of the Past with These Helpers

by Bill Kliewer, The Golf Warehouse (TGW.com)

Since the game began, golfers have been plagued by slice problems. These banana-shaped mis-hits can hamper accuracy and distance, and prevent lower scores. Fortunately, the problem is easier than ever to correct, thanks in part to a bevy of slice-correcting products, including the clubs and practice aids below.

Ping G10 Driver

The G10’s tall face and deep crown design help produce a high moment of inertia (MOI) for less club twisting and excellent forgiveness – a great game-improvement option. The draw-biased version features an internal weight pad positioned farther back and closer to the heel than the standard driver to promote easier club head rotation. The hosel is also positioned farther forward than the standard model to help golfers square the face at impact and prevent the slice.

Cobra M Speed Offset LD Driver

Designed for players with moderate swing speeds, the Speed LD M has a built-in draw bias to help straighten out tee shots. In addition, the Speed LD M is built with one of the largest faces on the market and an extra-low center of gravity to promote a high launch. Therefore, this is a great club for mid- to high handicappers looking to take their games to the next level. The offset head design helps prevent the club face from opening up upon contact to further correct slice issues.

SKLZ Gyro Swing Trainer

Golfers looking to fix their mechanics might want to look into the Gyro Swing Trainer, a practice device that encourages an ideal swing. The club head is fitted with a gyroscope that allows golfers to “feel” the perfect swing by encouraging them to “come over the top” and providing resistance when a swing goes off plane. The club comes with rechargeable batteries and an accompanying battery re-charger pack, as well as an instructional DVD and a head cover.

Spot-On Golf Swing Plane Training Aids

The preferred training aid of PGA Tour star Justin Rose, the Spot-On Golf Swing Plane consists of two liquid vials which provide a visual indicator of the ideal swing plane for each particular club. The proper swing is achieved by maintaining the "bubble" between the alignment marks on the vials. The Spot-On Swing Plane attaches easily to the shaft of any club and promotes good swing habits to help overcome the slice.

Inside Approach Swing Trainer

The Inside Approach Swing Trainer forces golfers to swing under a specially-designed foam cushion that discourages the slice-inducing “outside-in” swing plane. Testing shows most golfers correct the slice within six swings and add an average of more than 22 yards to their drives. It’s no wonder the Jack Nicklaus-endorsed product was rated the No. 1 swing trainer in 2004 and 2005 by Golf Digest.
